How to Look Natural in Engagement Photos (Even If You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera)

One of the most common things couples tell me before their engagement session is:

“We’re really awkward in photos.”

Honestly? Almost everyone says that.

Most couples aren’t professional models, and they shouldn’t have to be. The goal of an engagement session isn’t to create perfectly posed images that look like they belong in a magazine. The goal is to capture your relationship as it is right now – the laughter, the excitement, the connection, and all the little moments that make your relationship uniquely yours.

Before we ever met for their engagement session, Sam had already set the bar pretty high with his proposal.

Knowing that Hannah loved Leu Gardens, he came up with a plan that was equal parts thoughtful and sneaky. He arranged a girls’ day for Hannah, her mom, and her sister and carefully instructed them where to walk throughout the gardens. What Hannah didn’t know was that Sam had his family waiting nearby and was hiding along the route, ready for the perfect moment.

As they strolled through the gardens, Hannah suddenly spotted Sam waiting for her.

Completely surprised, she immediately brought her hands to her face in shock as he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

Thankfully for Sam, she said yes.

When it came time to choose a location for their engagement session, Hannah had several ideas, but we ultimately landed on Beck Ranch Park because of its beautiful oak trees and peaceful natural setting. It turned out to be the perfect backdrop for an evening that felt relaxed, genuine, and completely centered on the two of them. Tip #1: Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

One of the biggest secrets to how to look natural in engagement photos is surprisingly simple:

Stop thinking about the camera.

The couples who look the most comfortable in photos are usually the ones who are paying the least attention to being photographed.

Throughout their session, Hannah and Sam were constantly interacting with each other. They talked, laughed, teased one another, and genuinely enjoyed spending time together. Instead of worrying about where their hands were or whether they were standing perfectly, they focused on each other.

That’s what creates authentic expressions.

Tip #2: Don’t Be Afraid to Look a Little Silly

Some of my favorite moments from engagement sessions happen right after a couple stops worrying about looking cool.

Hannah and Sam were completely game for anything I suggested. If I asked them to walk together, spin, whisper something funny, or try a movement prompt, they jumped right in.

And when something didn’t go exactly as planned?

They laughed.

That willingness to embrace the moment instead of trying to control it is often what creates the best photographs.

Many couples think natural photos happen when everything goes perfectly. In reality, natural photos often happen in the moments between the poses when you’re simply being yourselves.

Tip #3: Trust the Process

A lot of couples worry that they don’t know how to pose.

The good news is that you don’t need to.

One of my jobs as your photographer is to guide you throughout the session so you never have to wonder how to look natural in your engagement photos or what to do next. Rather than placing you in stiff poses and expecting you to figure it out from there, I use prompts and movement that help create genuine interaction.

The goal isn’t to make you look like someone else.

The goal is to help you feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.

Tip #4: Remember Why You’re Taking These Photos

Engagement photos aren’t really about the photos.

They’re about celebrating a season of life that goes by incredibly fast.

As I watched Hannah and Sam throughout their session, what stood out most wasn’t the beautiful trees or the gorgeous evening light. It was how present they were with each other.

They weren’t treating the session like something they had to check off their wedding planning to-do list.

They treated it like a date.

They laughed easily. They enjoyed being together. They weren’t rushing from pose to pose.

And that made all the difference.

After photographing couples for more than a decade, I’ve learned that natural engagement photos rarely come from perfect poses.

They come from couples who are willing to show up as themselves.
