Choosing the perfect engagement photo location is one of the first decisions couples make after booking their engagement session, and it’s also one of the questions I get asked most often.

With so many beautiful locations around Central Florida, it’s easy to feel like you have to find the perfect spot. But after photographing engagement sessions for over 12 years, I’ve learned something that surprises a lot of couples:

The best engagement session locations aren’t necessarily the most elaborate, they’re the ones where you feel most like yourselves.

Kelly and Luke’s engagement session at Wekiwa Springs State Park was the perfect example of that.

They chose a quiet pine forest tucked away from the crowds. There weren’t grand gardens, dramatic architecture, or a dozen different backdrops. We spent almost the entire session surrounded by tall sand pines, soft grasses, and winding forest trails.

From the moment we met, I could tell they hadn’t chosen this location because it was flashy, they chose it because it gave them space to simply enjoy being together. They laughed constantly, teased each other, and never seemed worried about “getting the perfect photo.” They were just focused on each other.

And honestly? I never once wished we were somewhere else.

Kelly and Luke’s session is proof that the best engagement photo location isn’t always the one with the most scenery, it’s the one that allows you to relax, connect, and simply enjoy being together.

1. Choose an Engagement Photo Location That Fits Your Personality

Think about where the two of you naturally enjoy spending time together.

Do you love hiking and being outdoors? A nature trail or state park might be perfect.

Do you spend Saturday mornings exploring downtown coffee shops? An urban setting may feel more authentic.

Do you love the beach? Let’s head to the coast.

If you’re huge Disney fans, maybe a Disney resort is the perfect fit.

Kelly works as a Jungle Cruise skipper at Magic Kingdom, while Luke proudly describes himself as a former theater kid. Their relationship is playful, lighthearted, and full of inside jokes, so a quiet forest where they could laugh, twirl around, and simply be themselves suited them perfectly.

Your engagement photos should feel like an extension of your relationship, not like you’re pretending to be someone you’re not.

2. If You’re More Introverted, Skip the Crowds

Not everyone loves being the center of attention.

If the thought of hundreds of strangers watching you kiss makes you cringe, choose somewhere quieter.

One of the things I loved about Kelly and Luke’s session was how relaxed they became almost immediately. Without crowds walking past every few seconds, they could simply laugh, talk, and enjoy each other.

Those relaxed moments are what create genuine photographs.

One of my favorite conversations from the evening had nothing to do with wedding planning at all. Kelly shared that she loves Jane Austen novels, and they told me about one of their sweetest traditions. Instead of saying they “sent an email,” they tell each other they sent a “123 email”, an adorable phrase inspired by one of their little nieces who thought emails were called “one-two-three emails.” It’s those little quirks that make every couple different, and those are the stories I love getting to know during engagement sessions.

3. Don’t Worry About Finding a Location With 10 Different Backgrounds

This is probably the biggest misconception I hear.

Couples often think they need a location with lakes, bridges, gardens, fields, oak trees, and brick walls all in one place.

But beautiful engagement galleries aren’t created because the scenery changes every five minutes.

They’re created because your connection changes.

Throughout Kelly and Luke’s session, we stayed in essentially one area of Wekiwa Springs. The scenery remained almost the same, but the images never felt repetitive because they were constantly interacting, laughing, moving, and simply enjoying being together.

As photographers, we create variety through composition, perspective, light, and movement, not by driving to five different locations.

The right engagement photo location doesn’t have to offer ten different backdrops. It simply needs beautiful light and enough space for your personalities to shine.

4. Trust the Light

Sometimes the weather doesn’t look promising.

Kelly and Luke’s session was mostly cloudy, but instead of worrying, we embraced the soft light throughout the evening.

Then, just as we were wrapping up, the clouds opened for a few magical minutes.

The golden sunlight poured through the pine trees, creating some of my favorite images from the entire session. Those five extra minutes completely changed the feel of the gallery… and I’m so glad we stayed.

Sometimes the best light comes when you’re willing to be just a little patient.

5. Remember What the Photos Are Really About

When I think back on Kelly and Luke’s engagement session, I don’t remember the trees first.

I remember how easily they laughed together.

I remember hearing stories about Luke’s theater background and Kelly’s adventures as a Jungle Cruise skipper.

I remember watching them slip so naturally into conversation that sometimes it felt like I was simply documenting two best friends spending an evening together.

More than anything, I remember watching two people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

That’s what you’ll treasure years from now.

Not whether there was a bridge in the background.

Not whether your location had six different photo spots.

You’ll remember how it felt to spend an evening celebrating this season together.

6. Your Engagement Session Is About More Than Just the Photos

Once you’ve chosen an engagement photo location, don’t stress about whether you picked “the perfect place.” The experience you have there matters far more than checking every scenic box on your list.

One thing I always tell my couples is that your engagement session isn’t just about creating beautiful photos for your save-the-dates or wedding website.

It’s also a chance for us to get to know each other before your wedding day.
