Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Engagement Session | Kaitlyn & Steven

There are some places at Disney that feel busy and energetic… and then there’s Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

The second you step onto the property, it feels less like Central Florida and more like a peaceful mountain escape tucked somewhere near Yellowstone National Park. Between the towering pine trees, rocky waterfalls, timber bridges, lantern-lit walkways, bubbling geyser, and quiet lakeside views, it honestly feels hard to believe you’re still at Disney World.

And for Kaitlyn and Steven’s engagement session, it could not have been more perfect.

From the very beginning, these two were incredibly easygoing and fully trusted me as we explored all around Disney’s Wilderness Lodge together. We photographed everywhere from the resort waterfall and rocky pathways to the lakeside lookout, the wildflowers near the lodge, and finally ended the evening beneath the glowing lanterns outside the timber-covered walkway.

Truly… that final part of the evening felt downright magical. (Just wait till you see the photos from this part of their session at the end!)

Why Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Is One of My Favorite Places for Engagement Photos

If you’re considering engagement photos or even family photos at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, there’s so much variety packed into one location.

One of the things I love most as a photographer is how many completely different backdrops exist within walking distance:

  • waterfalls and rock features
  • towering pine trees
  • rustic timber architecture
  • peaceful lake views
  • warm lantern lighting at twilight
  • quiet walking paths lined with wildflowers
  • bridges and greenery
  • cozy lodge details that still feel unmistakably “Disney”

It gives couples the feeling of an adventurous getaway session without needing to travel outside of Florida.

And unlike some Disney locations that can feel crowded or overly theme-park focused, Wilderness Lodge has this calm, romantic atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

The warm lantern glow against all the greenery and wood textures creates some of the most cinematic nighttime images.

Kaitlyn & Steven’s Story

Kaitlyn and Steven met and got engaged within a year, but sometimes when you know, you know.

Listening to Steven talk about Kaitlyn during their session was honestly one of my favorite parts of the evening. He kept coming back to her playful, energetic spirit and the way she lights up a room with her smile.

Originally, he had planned to propose during a cruise. But when the surprise plans were accidentally discovered, he quietly shifted gears without telling anyone and created an entirely new plan instead.

This time, he proposed inside the fort in St. Augustine completely unexpectedly, catching Kaitlyn totally off guard in the best possible way.

A Coffee-Inspired Engagement Session

One of my favorite personal touches from their session was the little coffee setup we incorporated toward the end of the evening.

Coffee is a huge part of their relationship.

Steven’s family is from Puerto Rico, and he said they pretty much only drink Puerto Rican coffee at home. His dad is the one who keeps them stocked up, and over time Steven even learned how to make Kaitlyn’s favorite caramel latte.

So naturally, we styled part of their engagement session around that little piece of their everyday life together.

The coffee mugs, the Puerto Rican coffee, their quiet little “coffee bar” tradition at home… it made the session feel personal in a way that wasn’t overly staged or complicated.

What to Wear for a Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Photo Session

Kaitlyn and Steven absolutely nailed their outfit choices for their Disney’s Wilderness Lodge engagement session.

The deep pine green tones mixed with soft neutral beige photographed beautifully against all the natural textures throughout the resort… especially the trees, rocks, lanterns, and timber architecture. Wilderness Lodge tends to photograph best with earthy, natural colors like:

  • forest green
  • cream
  • beige
  • rust
  • soft brown
  • muted blues
  • warm neutrals

Because the resort already has so much rich texture and greenery, these tones help everything feel cohesive and timeless without competing with the surroundings.

If your style leans more airy, pastel, bright, or beachy, you may also want to consider another Disney resort for your session instead. Resorts like Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort or Disney’s BoardWalk Inn tend to pair beautifully with lighter, airier color palettes and offer a completely different visual feel. If that style fits you better, you can check out my sessions from those resorts in the linked blog posts in the previous sentence!

How to Get to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge for a Photo Session

One thing to know before planning a photo session at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is that parking and transportation work a little differently if you aren’t staying at the resort itself.

If you’re not a guest at Wilderness Lodge, you generally have two main options. The first is making a dining reservation at one of the resort restaurants, which allows you to park directly at the resort during your reservation window. The second option is using Disney’s complimentary transportation system to travel to Wilderness Lodge.

For Kaitlyn and Steven’s engagement session, I personally parked at Epcot and took the Disney bus from Epcot directly to Wilderness Lodge. Out of the transportation options, this felt like one of the easiest routes.

Another option is parking at Disney Springs and taking a resort bus from there, although this does involve walking through Disney Springs and security first. You can also travel from Magic Kingdom, but that route usually requires several extra transportation steps through the Ticket and Transportation Center.

Overall, once you arrive, Wilderness Lodge feels incredibly peaceful and tucked away from the busier parts of Disney World, which makes it such a beautiful location for engagement sessions and family photos.

The Most Magical Way to End a Disney Engagement Session

By the end of the night, the lanterns around Wilderness Lodge had started glowing and the entire resort transformed. (This is the part you’ve been waiting for!)

The warm yellow lights mixed with the deep greens from the trees and landscaping created the dreamiest atmosphere imaginable. It felt cozy, romantic, peaceful, and somehow still unmistakably Disney all at once.

It was honestly the perfect ending to Kaitlyn and Steven’s Disney’s Wilderness Lodge engagement session.

Planning Your Own Engagement or Family Session at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge?

If you’re planning a Disney vacation, engagement, anniversary trip, or even just want family photos somewhere that feels peaceful, adventurous, and different from the typical Orlando locations, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is genuinely one of my favorite resorts for portraits.

The variety throughout the property makes it incredible for:

  • engagement sessions
  • anniversary sessions
  • family photos
  • extended family sessions (think grandparents, their adult kids, and grandkids!)
  • maternity sessions
  • surprise proposals
  • couples celebrating a Disney trip together

And the best part?
You don’t have to step foot inside a theme park to get something that still feels magical.
